You're comparing being connected into LTE versus something essentially on standby with no connections?

If you're within a service area there is absolutely no reason why a phone should only last a few hours on LTE.

In the LAPTOP Battery Test, which involves continuous surfing over 4G at 40 percent brightness, the iPhone 5 lasted 7 hours and 13 minutes. That's longer than the Samsung Galaxy S III (6:55) and over an hour longer than the smartphone category average. The Sprint iPhone 4S running iOS 6 lasted 5:54. However, the Droid RAZR Maxx is still the endurance champ; it's 3,330 mAh battery lasted nearly 8.5 hours. We'll update this review with anecdotal battery life results shortly.

The 40% brightness is also interesting from the in depth study done by Display Mate earlier as well. The maximum brightness on the S3 is already limited to half of the iPhone 5 just to try to save on battery life. Matching actual physical brightness would make the time difference substantially larger.
