It's not the same thing as USB with a different connector on the other end. It's a port that can be programatically reconfigured to handle multiple data protocols and physical/electrical signalling systems using a common set of pins, in an undifferentiated physical orientation.

You cannot modify a microUSB to do any of what this connector is capable of - because it's just a USB controller sitting on the other side of the phone's connector, which has a fixed function tied to physical outputs with fixed orientation.

Just because we aren't running protocols other than USB 2.0 over this cable today doesn't mean we won't be using it for a variety of existing, as well as upcoming protocols, in the future. Apple's intent is to keep this same connector style for quite a while (the 30 pin connector lasted what, 8-10 years?), so it needs to be adaptable.
