They're not going to deviate from USB by creating something totally new like Thunderbolt. All computers use USB so if they attempted to innovate like you expect them to, they would alienate a lot of consumers.
If they came out with a cable using USB 3.0 you would have the same comment too. "That's not innovative. They're just repurposing existing technology. Which is exactly what Apple does a lot of."

Well that is exactly what they did. Sure, its more sturdy, but the whole thing reeks of a huge money grab.
I can modify my microUSB charger in about 20 min to make it charge my phone faster. I'm sure if Apple would have wanted too they could have come up with something similar.
