The reason the game skill level is set to All-Star/Hardcore is because that's the setting that's most ideal to make sure the game isn't too difficult in regards of taking on the CPU (since human should have some sort of incentive to play the game), but also level out the skill level playing field by making the game play under realistic oriented gameplay settings.

Now I could adjust it to normal, but I fear that then the game will become too easy for those very skilled at the game, and those that are having trouble against good players will have even more trouble. Not to mention it would take a user skill (passing) out of the equation as well. Plus some aspects of the game are tuned a bit differently since it's not on hardcore settings.

For the meantime the settings should remain the same. Honestly just more repetitions with hardcore passing will make you naturally improve. Get offline games against the CPU will give you great practice since you'll be forced to make passes while under harassment. Once you can do that you'll be a lot better at aiming your passes.
In that case, I think that All Star/Hardcore is the way to go. Because you're right...in NHL 12, I would suck most of the time against others in normal online play because I just wasn't as skilled.

But in our league, I've noticed that even though I've lost 9 out of the 11 games I've played, the vast majority of them were close games, even if the score didn't say so. Most of my goals against have been my young goaltender's inexperience, but I gotta say, he was much better in last night's game. Although that could have been because I was better in front of him.

I feel like I have been getting better with time, and I try to practice against the CPU when I can.

One thing I have trouble with though...I can't seem to gain any pressure in the offensive zone because I don't get too far before I give the puck up. And passing to the CPU is risky, first of all, and secondly, the AI controlled players on the ice are almost always out of position. Half the time I feel like I'm by myself out there.
