in my opinion, this argument is unfair. The primary reason why getting an iphone for my mom, and contemplated for my wife, was the simplicity and 'it just works' concept.
researching boards, etc, is something i expect more technically savvy folk to do (ie. not my mom/wife).
therefore, if apple has slipped in it's reputation of being an easy to use interface, then i think things start evening up (at the very least) pretty quickly in the smartphone space.
