I cannot find what it is made off but it looks like your standard plastic adapter but I am not sure. I would think it would be better off with a round or oval metal housing around it for strength.

How is it different from the 30-pin connector?
It's 80 percent smaller yet sturdier, and it's reversible, so you don't have to worry about which side is the top or bottom when you connect.
