What do you have right now? It it that old, or is your phone in rough shape? You say you have 12 months left; which would put you right on the edge of when the 4 came out; but 3GS was cheaper. If your phone is just old (3GS), I would post a wanted thread for a 4; offering your 3GS as trade. I say that because I'm planning on keeping my 3GS when I upgrade; as it's still a good iPod touch. Others may be upgrading from the 4 to the 5; but don't want to give up their 4 for the same reason.
Really, you have 3 choices right now:
- Upgrade to the 5 through Rogers. Pay ~$400 and be stuck for another 3 full years.
- Buy a 5 from Apple ($650), get it unlocked and have the freedom to switch after 1 year.
- Wait out the year; either with what you have or buying from somebody else. Then switch providers.
Of course there is another option. Call and ask to speak to retentions. Tell them you are looking at those options. Make sure they believe that it is worth the extra $250 to you to buy the unlocked phone now. Let them know that any way you go, you are done with Rogers at the end of 12 months; unless they give you something better.
Because that is what Bell is doing on their own. Good business for them- they realize it's better to get me into a new contract now while my old contract will cost me to get out; instead of waiting until I have no penalties to get out. When I was with Telus they did the same; offered me new phones all the time when I was under contract with them.
