That is one of my pet peeves, you don't have to buy apple peripherals, but they are designed to work together seamlessly and without hassle, why wouldn't you?
How many airplay enabled devices are there, that aren't built by Apple? And how many of those don't support DLNA?

I'd say DLNA streaming is more versatile than airplay, and I've found that works a lot better with my Android tablet than with my iPhone.
