Actually, it can't.

The ecosystem that people are invested in can't be duplicated without extreme cost.

I am in the market for a new phone, and will probably get one in the new few months. Right now, I am using my wife's old iPhone (because it is head and shoulders above my Blackberry).

At home we have iTunes (and have since 2004 when the iPod was the only quality MP3 player). All my music is ripped in Apple lossless or purchased from iTunes, because it has always been simple to buy. We got a Apple TV 2, because the 2 media terminals we tried before it were garbage, so now all our DVDs are imported into iTunes as well.

I can sit at home with my phone, pull up a video that I took with my phone, or from youtube and play it on my Apple TV instantly. I can use my phone as a remote for the Apple TV if I want to watch something from netflix or my library.

So here I am with all this time, and money, invested in this ecosystem and it doesn't make sense to break free because Apple made it work so well together, before anyone else did.

So when I look at the iPhone 5, I see a phone that I will probably break and cost me a ton later on to fix. I see a phone that I will spend a little bit more money on (maybe $50 extra, with a contract), but I also see a phone where I don't need to rip my entire CD library again. I see a phone where all my current settings, apps, will transfer over seemlessly and I wont need to screw with both figuring out a new OS and then setting it up how I like.

I really want to buy a S3, because I think it is far more durable, but the reality is, there is much more to the product that Apple offers than the physical device or the OS it has installed. I have slowly bought into that ecosystem over the years, because as I adopted a new technology, I would try other options and eventually end up with Apple product, because they were the best.

Just my 2 cents.
