Actually I think Shining Force 1 and 2 for Genesis would trump Vandal Hearts as it was a PS release, wasn't it? Also Ogre Battle, while slightly different in style, was for SNES and came out between SF 1 and 2 I believe. Vandal Hearts was the first one to bring that 3d terrain style combat into play though, for sure.
Either way, it was a great game and I enjoyed both it and the sequel many times.
I also understand what you mean about CC and its character development. The best part about these games is getting to know and identifying with different characters. I bet that if you picked twenty people from this thread to enter in their final SF1 roster or FF3 roster there would be a lot of differences. Its all about the players you liked and enjoyed playing. When you have a choice of 100 players its hard to figure out which ones you like, or you just stick with the same five and screw the rest, which isn't utilizing the whole game.
I liked replaying SF 1 and 2 with different members of my group, it made it more challenging and a lot of fun.
