Some people also lack the sense of spatial awareness and could think that the crosswalk is closer than it really is, and slams into another car, with the driver being distracted or not, even though that car had more than enough room to stop.
If people are going to do something like that, I hope that they do it with a clear head and some common sense, not "I want to be a hero like that guy in the hummer."

Even with your smart car example. it would be better for the pedestrians to be hit by a smart car than to have a vehicle hit them head on unimpeded.
