Why? Because not everyone knows what their car can handle? I willing to bet that some drivers on the road lacks so much common sense, that they think their small ass Smart car could hit another car and prevent it from hitting pedestrians. If somebody does that, I'm willing to bet that the smart car is going to be the one that slams into the pedestrians.
Some people also lack the sense of spatial awareness and could think that the crosswalk is closer than it really is, and slams into another car, with the driver being distracted or not, even though that car had more than enough room to stop.
If people are going to do something like that, I hope that they do it with a clear head and some common sense, not "I want to be a hero like that guy in the hummer."
