Personally, I can't imagine not being there with my dog at the end. When it was time, I took him for a long walk, gave him his fill of all the foods he liked, and then went to the vet.
I sat beside him on the bench, he put his head on my arms, we looked into each others eyes, I told him everything was all-right and it was time to rest. He relaxed, sighed, closed his eyes and gently went to sleep.
Yes, it was the hardest thing I have done in my life, but I wouldn't trade those last moments for anything. Being there at the end knowing he went peacefully gave me a real sense of closure and peace.
