Certainly hard work and inspiration are important factors, but I would not underestimate luck and corruption.
I met some brilliant, talented, hard-working people in South America, that can never aspire to be more than waiters.
My father was a farm boy with poor marks in high school, but he could play football. He was able to attend university, and became very successful in the oil patch. Sure, he worked damn hard, but he was lucky he was good at football, or he would still be milking cows.
