Hard work is only one factor that causes people to become uber wealthy and successful. Luck has a lot to do with it as well.
I am not a wealthy person (average middle/working class). I also did work reasonably hard to get this way and it is an improvement from my situation at birth, but I don't think that means that I necessarily work harder than someone poorer than me who just didn't have the opportunities or upbringing that I did. I know for a fact that there are thousands of people in this country that work harder than I do and have less to show for it.
It drives me bonkers when extremely wealthy people say that anyone can have what they do if they just worked hard enough. It's complete BS. It takes an uncontollable series of events to create these situations and perhaps a particularly astute or gifted person can recognize these and take advantage of the opportunities when they occur. I say good for them and wish them no ill will for it, but don't make it sound like it's because they work harder.
