Like him or not, Jack Layton provided the voter something that federal Canadian politics hadn't seen in quite some time; a charismatic and in some ways inspiring leader. How he earned the seats to become official opposition just went to show how starved Canadians are for a leader and not just a politician. This all in spite of having a hilarious platform that would have bankrupted the government.

He deserved a state funeral
I know he was a feel good story because of his resurgence and battle with Cancer but I don't think Jack Layton was inspiring (politically) or charismatic.

He got lucky in one election because the federal liberals have been putting on a clinic over the last decade on how to turn a party's complete dominance of federal politics into a completely embarrassing #### show.

All that being said he was the leader of the official opposition and had a place in Canadian politics for a long time. I'm in the against a state funeral and spending $368k but only because of this thread. Had I read about this in the paper I probably would have skipped right over the story.
