What people should find is an example of a player who came over from Europe or dropped out of college and played in the AHL before they were 20. Ivan Huml might have been one, Dipietro another. Hard to find their contract info though.
Smid was a 2004 draftee. He came over at 19, played the entire 05/6 year in the AHL. His contract slid, and his ELC was still in effect for 3 more years after that full year in the AHL (06/7, 07/8, and 08/9), essentially making his ELC 4 years long. He was an RFA in the summer of 2009.

I think Tatar has seen his ELC slide twice even though he's played the last two years in the AHL, so his 3 year ELC would actually last 5 years (assuming the potential lockout doesn't affect that). He was also a Sept16-Dec31 birthday, so he might be a good example for Bartschi's situation?
