So the Flames would be paying him his AHL salary as per his NHL contract and yet that somehow wouldn't use up a year of his contract? That makes absolutely no sense at all and I find it hard to believe that could be possible. He'd be playing a year of pro hockey making the money dictated by his NHL contract so it seems absurd that it wouldn't use up a year of the deal.
What people should find is an example of a player who came over from Europe or dropped out of college and played in the AHL before they were 20. Ivan Huml might have been one, Dipietro another. Hard to find their contract info though.
