If it's just a rifle (or shotgun), keep it out of sight. Perfectly legal. I'd have to consult my manual but I don't believe it even has to be trigger locked. Just locked in the car and out of sight.
Restricted firearms (Hand Guns, Assault Rifles) are a totally different demon. They MUST be trigger locked or disabled, and stored inside a locked container. Can only be transported to and from a certified range on a reasonably direct route.
One thing my instructor told us during my course that I found a little surprising is he said you are well within your rights to sling a rifle over your shoulder and hop on the C-Train. Probably not going to end well for you but legal.
