If you have any desire to actually try them out, go get your PAL. It's a fun course really. I had the same problem a little over a year ago. My parents had a rifle in their basement that they wanted to get rid of during an amnesty but I wanted to hold on to it. Got my licence, called the RCMP to register it (again, Harper had an amnesty on at the same time saying anyone with unregistered rifles could register them with no fear of prosecution) and they never asked why it hadn't been registered.
Not an issue now anyways with the long gun registry going away. Only thing you need to be compliant is your licence and a trigger lock.
