Is crafting in GW2 actually worth doing?

In every game I can think of except for two, crafting has always been pretty much useless except for a few key professions that make consumable items like pots or gear augmentations. It seems that your character is always so far ahead of the level he's able to craft gear for that it's useless until you roll an alt or finally hit max level and manage to find some of the desired patterns. In the few games where you actually could make gear of your own level, it was often unnecessary since quest rewards would provide equal or better gear anyway. You would just craft the occasional more obscure item like belts or bracers that weren't as commonly found elsewhere.

The only two games I've played that really made use of crafting were UO - where your gear would constantly get stolen or would wear out and be destroyed, so you were always replacing things; and Dark Age of Camelot - where you could construct things like siege weapons for RvR.
