See the problem with Metallica albums is how they're judged. Never on their own mertis, just versus other albums in their catalogue. Yes, compared to Metallica/Load/Reload/St. Anger, Death Magnetic is a very good album. Compared to all metal albums though? I mean Mastodon has 3 better record this decade, as does Opeth. Megadeth's "The System Has Failed" is a vastly superior album to Death Magnectic, and so on. So within what has happened to Metallica since 1988, DM is a great album. Against every other metal release in recent memory, it doesn't even approach a top-10 list.
