I have not seen it in a while, since pre-smart phone days, but if this is a case of that, then you can break off those pins in the male microUSB connector, and it will charge. I have not done any research on that relating to the Nexus though, so if you wanted to try this, I would do some research to see if that is the case before you wrecked a cable.

I don't think that's the case here as I have a data connection and charging working fine simultaneously right now with a number of different cables including an aftermarket retractable one on my Nexus 7. Don't know what it could be otherwise though, maybe a bad power line contact on the cable he used?
