So a band getting played on the radio a lot is a sellout? I think you're misinterpretting the result with the process. Metallica for instance had a top-40 song (One) and a top-10 album (AJFA) before they become Selloutica (and while they were still Alcoholica). Was it that that song and album were so commerically viable? Or was it because people really like them? A 7 minute 24 second song about the horrors of war...doesn't sound to me like they were thinking hit song when they wrote it.
With Nickelback, the endgame is the same: Produce hit, popular songs. Thats their process. For them they usually get the result as well. They go into the studio trying to record a hit, and they usually do. For the Metallica example, they wanted to write a song based off "Johnny Got His Gun", and it happened to become a hit because its an awesome song.
