I have definitely gained more of an understanding of other viewpoints at times--and perhaps more importantly I've learned where my own perspective is partial, biased, imperfect and incomplete.

I don't think I often change my mind about an issue that I have thought deeply about--it's happened once or twice, when a poster was extremely reasonable and persuasive. On the other hand if it was an issue that I hadn't thought about yet, and my opinion was in the early formative stages, I've definitely changed my mind.

I think it's a good exercise to ask yourself: what evidence would persuade me that I'm incorrect? I try to ask myself that when I'm in a contentious discussion, but I can't claim I always remember to.
