The more you carry, the more you'll have to carry.
They don't stay in hotels with bellhops, and the hotels in Europe typically have old/small/slow elevators. Your choice is either to stand and wait for the elevator with the other 50 people on your trip, or grab your bag and hike up the stairs.
There's a trade-off between the convenience of not having to do laundry versus the convenience of not having to carry a 50 pound suitcase up 6 flights of stairs.
It's advice I didn't listen to, but usually regretted by the end of the trip.
