of course this angers him. Wouldn't you be pissed if Liverpool were on the verge of signing a key player for a big fee, but then a former Everton player - let's say Rooney - comes along and tells the guy that the city of Liverpool sucks and he should go somewhere else instead of joining Liverpool.
