I suppose it's all relative. But people from Sony and Marvel both expected this to earn in line or close to what Spider-Man 3 earned, but obviously it didn't do that, coming up some $200 million short of that goal. In that regard, it was a disappointment for the studio. The box-office reaction also suggests the movie going public didn't necessarily want a new Spider-Man series.

I highly doubt the studio expected to beat out the follow-up movie to what was (at the time) considered to be one of, if not the best superhero movie ever which also happened to hold the record for the biggest opening at the time. They're expectations would have been way out to lunch if that was the case. The studio has made ~500 million from the movie. Oh darn, what a disappointment.
