The Spider-Man reboot was a reaction to them outright rejecting a Spider-Man 4, saying rather than continue with what had become a weak series after the third one, they chose to simply start over.

I suppose it's all relative. But people from Sony and Marvel both expected this to earn in line or close to what Spider-Man 3 earned, but obviously it didn't do that, coming up some $200 million short of that goal. In that regard, it was a disappointment for the studio. The box-office reaction also suggests the movie going public didn't necessarily want a new Spider-Man series.
