After I jumped through all the hoops the lady at the passport office said the first time you damage your passport there are no issues, but if you damage your replacement passport they will probably give you more grief when you go to get a new one.

As for your question about should you chance it. I had a friend who was a boarder agent for a while and he said that it is really up to the individual, you might get lucky and they won't care but do you really want to chance it?
bumping this old thread.

I accidentally put my passport through the washing machine, and the cover is detached from the "paper" part. the photo and stamps are still in tact, but it seemed like the pages have swelled up as the pages are now larger than the denim cover.

do you recommend I get a new passport, just to avoid any issues? I'm going on my honeymoon in September 25th to France, and I don't want any issues.
