There are two broad groups of people who believe that gay people should be treated as less thans-
1. People who think that gay people are different than straight people, either by nature or nurture, and should receive less rights based on those differences. This is the definition of bigotry. This group is deserving of contempt.
2. People who think that the only difference between gay people and straight people is that when gay people feel the same temptation to commit gay acts that all people face, they give in to that temptation. This group is deserving of pity.
