My only explanation is they're reacting to the idea of gay marriage purely emotionally, not rationally, and when posed a question that threatens their emotional response with critical reason, they don't want to allow themselves to acknowledge it because of the difficult problems it raises for themselves.

Furthering this, he has basically now disappeared after the questioning got to be pretty tough, and he seemed to be painted into a corner. Rather than coming out and simply standing by his beliefs, he runs to avoid admitting what would make him look bad. If you're afraid your beliefs will be mocked by the majority and thus choose to not fully admit them, it seems kind of cowardly to me.
