WEEK 5: BC Lions at STAMPEDERS
Which Calgary Stampeders' team will show up against the BC Lions tomorrow? I think this team are capable of leading the Western Division at the end of the season if they stay away from stupid penalties and boneheaded mistakes. Most of the stupid penalties they committed so far are not from the young guys so it is kind of tough to figure out why.
OFFENSE:
Leads the CFL in scoring with 36.8 points per game. Also leads the league in TD(13) and first downs(100). They are 4th in total offense and their running game is non-factor so far this season and they are 5th in the league with only 86.2 yards per game. RB JOn Cornish 39 yards last game is 7th in the league with 200 yards and his average per game 4.3 yards is the lowest amongst the eight starting RB in the CFL.
Whether we like it or not, our starting QB will Kevin Glenn pretty much the rest of the season. I have to admit i am one of the people that keeps harping on Kevin Glenn. Last game against the Riders, he redeemed himself by completing 385 yards in passing, 4 TD passes and did not throw any INT. All I am hoping for is he keep up his mistake-free plays. Glenn also showed how tough he is by keep coming after getting some hit.
R Nik Lewis caught 7 for 98 yards and 3 TDs. He is the best player for the Calgary Stampeders this season so far. Whenever they involve him in plays, he makes things happen. Lewis leads the league in receptions(32) and TD(6). He is 2nd in league with 362 yards receptions.
R Marquay McDaniel is Kevin Glenn's favorite target so far. McDaniel doesn't give Kevin Glenn any reason to stay away from him whenever he needs to move the ball. He's got 15 receptions in the last 3 games he played. The receiver who played ahead of him in the first game Landan Talley have been released already in order to make some room for newly DB Tad Kornegay. Another of Glenn's former teammate in Hamilton R Chris Bauman played well last game and ended up with 7 receptions for 86 yards. That is Bauman's best single-game totals since Week 1 of 2008.
DEFENSE:
Stamps just added former Riders/Lions DB Tad Kornegay for this game. I guess Hufnagel feels that they need a veteran presence in secondary especially with Keon Raymond out for a few games and Brandon Smith banged up the last two games.
Defense gave 30 points in 3 out of 4 games so far. They are 5th in points allowed at 120 and 4th in TD allowed with 13. They are the toughest team to run against given up 73.2 yards per game but Riders ran for 131 rushing yards last game. They are 3rd in the CFL in QB sacks with 9 and they are 2nd in league in INT with 5. Malik Jackson's interception last game was the 1st Riders turnover this season. Last game DL Chris McCoy had 3 tackles and 2 QB sacks against the Riders.
SPECIAL TEAM:
Larry Taylor leads the league in all-purpose yards with 1,046 yards. K Rene Paredes was 4 for 4 and scored 15 points last game. Punter Rob Maver is 2nd in the league in punting average with 45.3 yards. Stamps' PUNT coverage leads the CFL allowing only 6.3 yards per return.
THE OPPOSITION:
BC Lions is 0-1 on the road so far and 0-2 against the Western division rivals this season. Due to suspension appeal, DL Khalif Mitchell will play while awaiting for his appeal. Against the Eskimos was not the first time Khalif Mitchell made some dirty plays. He was tossed from a game in his 1st season against the Blue Bombers. He punched Winnipeg OL Andre Douglas after the play. I believed it was last season or the same season before against the Stampeders, he kicked Burris' face after the QB went down.
Travis Lulay is 4th in passing and 3rd in TD passes but he leads the league in INT with 5. He also leads all QB in rushing. Calgary held Harris in check last season limiting him his totals to just 120 yards & 2 TD in 3 games.
BC Lions is 3rd in the CFL in points allowed(25.5 per game) and 3rd in fewest TD allowed(8).
Calgary needs to stay away from stupid penalties. Offense also needs to stay away from turnovers and dropped passes.
Week 6 is a Bye Week for the Stampeders.
GO STAMPS GO!!!
