I was always the last guy picked in phys ed.... I was absolutely, terribly brutal at all team sports in addition to being badly out of shape. So I didn't play any team sports growing up. A little baseball here and there, but no hockey at all.

So last year I tried joining a few sports teams - one ball hockey and the other was mixed doubles tennis. Both were absolute disasters. I was by far the worst player at both... which was no surprise to me since I had not played either. But I was joining a rec league that claimed to welcome beginners. So at ball hockey my teammates generally used me as a pylon. They would never pass to me... they told me to stand in front of the goalie and block his view or would yell for me to cover someone, but unless I stole the ball from someone, I wouldn't have it on my stick the entire night. Tennis was worse since at least I got to "play" ball hockey. Nobody wanted me as their partner in tennis so I sat there watching from the sidelines two nights in a row before quitting. I gave up the ball hockey too. So now the sports I'm involved with are sports where you compete against yourself to set your own personal bests.... running, swimming, cycling. It is amazing just how competitive people are in a REC LEAGUE.
