Here is a question.
If these events are increasing what changed?
The gun laws didn't change they have been this way for years and years. semiautomatic pistols, shotguns and semiautomatic rifles have been available for public purchase since they were invented. You can buy the same AR-15 in the 70s as you can now. It looks a little different but still has a big clip and goes boom every time you pull the trigger.
Also the majority of your gun violence happens in areas with pretty strict gun control laws. How is more of that going to stop it? Many members of this board take such pride in applying scientific methods to interpret events, how do you answer this?
Also this story is a bunch of crap or the guys in question were plain clothes police and your cousin should stay home until he feels better and avoid extremely violent movies for awhile.

My cousin lives in Colorado Springs and went to see TDKR last night. Two guys walked into the theatre with handguns on their hips. The theatre managers and on-duty police officers spoke with them and they left. My cousin was shook up by it. As were many of the people in audience. Not sure what these guys were thinking. </coolstorybro>

If cops saw two guys with handguns they would have slapped the cuffs on them as that is illegal in Colorado.

Colorado allows a person to carry a firearm in a vehicle, loaded or unloaded, if its use is for lawful protection of such person or another's person or property. [C.R.S. 18-12-105(2)] Colorado law also allows a person to possess a handgun in a dwelling, place of business, or automobile. However, you cannot carry the weapon concealed on or about your person while transporting it into your home, business, hotel room, etc. Local jurisdictions may not enact laws that restrict a person's ability to travel with a weapon.
