Well we really don't know how exactly he used his weapons, but the Remington 870 Pump Action shotgun he had holds 8 rounds, IIRC, so that is an awful lot of damage he can do without reloading.
And its pretty easy to reload, especially if the rounds are on a holder on the butt or even in your pocket.
Dark movie theatre, hard to see the targets....except the front row.....there was obviously a reason he had the shotgun.
