Thanks for the input, Kavy. I've done some more troubleshooting

Since my original post...

- I was able to recreate the problem with my iPod as the source (ruled out computer as the problem)
- received a free replacement cable from Edifier with the volume control knob and headphone jack input. The new cable did not fix the problem.
- tested the speakers today by connecting them directly to another source, bypassing the subwoofer and cable. They check out fine.

I guess I'm down to looking at the subwoofer as the culprit, or taking it in for repair. Weird.
