Well don't do what my buddy just did.
He managed to get ahold of the person who found his phone. She's a crackhead located in the downtown eastside of Vancouver. He arranges to meet her outside the crackhotel and get his IPhone back for $200, which is what she supposedly paid for it. He gives her the money, but she tells him that the phone is inside, and she will go get it.
She doesn't come out of the crackhotel. He phones the police. After laughing at him, the police enter the crackhotel and pull random junkies out for varying offences (they had a reason to be in the crackhouse, and are now legally able to arrest people for things they see going on in the hallways). The police are unable to find the woman who has taken his IPhone and money.
Several days later, my buddy is able to track his phone to a seady apartment block in Surrey. The police arrive again, but as they are unable to locate the exact room can now do nothing. My buddy claims that his phone has now been permanently deactivated.
That being said, I've had good experiences too. I left my phone on a bus once...got it retunred. Unfortunately it was found by a high school kid who decided to phone every guy in my book and tell them I was high on acid. He phone every girl in my book and asked them out....even it was their mother who answered. In the end I had some explaining to do, probably alienated a few people permanently, but got a few dates out of the deal too.
