If you take a train to Munich, your ticket will say "MUENCHEN" even though the German name of the city is München. In German, there is an established rule for spelling words that contain special characters for usage where those characters aren't available. It doesn't seem to be as well defined in other languages that use the umlaut.
It also shows that the Flames took the time to make sure they did properly translate his name when they drafted him.
Look at Grossmann. In Dallas, they always spelled his name with one "N" and it wasn't until he was traded to Philly and someone was checking his paperwork that they realized that it should have two "N"s.
