Lang for example is the German equivalent of long and is actually pronounced close to how we pronounce long. In English we would pronounce that word Laing. Although English isn't exactly consistent in this usage. You'll notice that the A in bang sounds like ai or how we pronounce the letter A, while the A in bar is more like how the Deutsch speakers would pronounce A's.

So if Bartschi didn't have the umlaut (ä) it would be pronounced close to Bar-chi. But since it does have the umlaut the sound of vowel changes to something close to Bear-chi or Bair-chi

Deutsch/German has a lot more consistent pronounciation. English is actually the confusing one as we've borrowed a lot of words from German and French and inconsistencies abound in rules and pronounciation.
I think it was poking fun of "ea" when it was supposed to be "ae"
