Flip it around - tie iAd into it, and start paying podcasters a cut on targeted advertising, plus free amarketing of the podcast itself and unlimited bandwidth out of Apple's datacenters.

Doesn't sound so bad for the amateur but successful podcaster now, does it?

I doubt this is the direction they are going though - it seems more likely to me that Apple would monetize podcasting the traditional way, with in-app subscriptions and their 30% cut.

And Russic's explanation makes a lot of sense too. Like a lot of things Apple's been doing lately, this podcast app seems a bit half-baked - I think the whole space is clearly in a bit of flux for Apple right now - what we have today isn't where they will end up moving forward.
