After the Stanley Cup turned pro, Albert George Grey, 4th Earl Grey and Governor General of Canada, intended to donate a new trophy to the Dominion senior hockey champions. Sir H. Montague Allen beat him to the punch, and instead, the Grey Cup became the Dominion rugby football championship. This despite the fact that Lord Grey likely never saw a football game in his life.
103 years later, the Grey Cup is the biggest single-day sporting event in Canada, while the Allan Cup has faded into complete obscurity.
