I typically don't take a person's income or vacation schedule into account before buying them a gift.

Sorry grandma, no gift for you, you have a nice retirement fund!

My kid likes his teacher, wants to give them a gift because he likes the teacher, we go out shopping for a gift for the teacher. Even better if I think the teacher has gone a good job (which my kid's teachers have).

It just tends to happen on the last day of school because that's a convenient day for such things to occur.
