it works pretty well and is a lot easier that doing multiple long exposure shots hoping to catch some lightning. it also works well if you want to do some off camera flash photography - set up your shot, trigger your flash and the sensor picks up the flash and will take the picture

My little Canon Powershots get motion detection functionality through a downloadable firmware package called CHDK. You just gave me a way to use my 3D camera again (the USB ports that I previously used for sync have died on me twice now, so I'm done putting money into that particular set up). Of course, it'll only work for off-camera flash, but still nice.
I also did not realize you could get those sensors that cheap, the one I saw was closer to $300. Dunno if it would work as a general motion sensor, but I would try it for fireworks. (My experience with fireworks is that the first ones are always the best - less smoke hanging around.)
