Blake Wheeler was a top-five pick, and he didn't enter the NHL until four years after his draft-year.
And no, I don't think that that Jankowski's age is being overblown. Matt Dumba, Filip Forsberg, Teuvo Teravainen, Andrei Vasilevski, and Olli Maatta were the only other 17-year-olds drafted in the first round, and only Jankowski and Teravainen were born in September 1994. Out of the top-thrity in the draft, there were only two players that were mere days away from the cutoff for next year. By way of comparison, the top two picks in the 2012 draft were very close to the other side of the margin, with birthdates very close to the other side of the cut-off date.
