General Zod is on the cast list at imdb.com, so my speculation is similar to the original Superman plot where he just shows up when Supes is older and they have a show down.

Will be a much better movie when he is fighting Zod instead of a rock. This also gives time for Luthor to take notice of Superman and start plotting for the sequel..
