MONTREAL—It haunts them still! Ever since Pierre Trudeau retired from politics, the federal Liberals have tried and failed to agree on how to reconcile their party with mainstream Quebec.
The issue split the party into irreconcilable factions at the time of the Meech Lake debate and the 1990 leadership campaign. It inspired the most divisive debate of the campaign that led to Stéphane Dion’s surprise 2006 victory. By all indications, it will be revisited in the upcoming Liberal leadership contest.
