I just used the SRAM ones that came with the shifters. Taking them off isn't so bad, cause they kind of roll up. If for some reason I ever have to go through this endeavour again, I will cut them off and get the type you suggested.

After all this, my bike is almost ready for its first test ride once I dial in the rear derailleur. It's amazing how virtually everything is a bottleneck in the build process.
