We have blackout blinds in our walkout and it is amazing. Basically, our entire north wall consists of large windows and a windowed door. All have blackout blinds, and we can watch a movie easy anytime of the day.
One caveat: our windows are northwest facing, not south facing, but it's quite bright when the blinds are up during the day.
Another point to consider: while you'll always get more size for less money with a projector, you should also factor in noise - where your projector is and how loud it is during operation are important to know. Also, if you have kids/pets, an out-of-the-way projector and a screen are harder to damage than a giant LCD screen.
