Ireland is quite talented but doesn't have that edge. Ireland used to battle against any great power.
I've never seen Ireland lose 4-0 to anybody, ever.

I was agreeing with Keane. Ireland needs to give it's great fans something to really cheer about like in the past.

That great Dutch team that won it all in 88?
Ireland were 9 minutes from knocking them out. Losing to a weird goal.
They are not "quite talented". They are a very average group of individuals.

If you want a comparison regarding the 88 and 90 team that you mention let me give you Wimbledon under Vinnie Jones. A bunch of below average for their league footballers that collectively as a team had a self belief, no-nonsense, pack mentality that carried them to victories above their realm. Pretty to watch technically? No. But to watch as an example of how self belief , team work and pure hard work can perservere? Yes.
That's the main reason that the fans fell in love with that team, and that they were like a bunch of misfit mercenaries. Hell, it even turned out that Cascarino isn't even Irish by ancestry! Granted they had a bit more talent than todays team and having 2 centre backs like McGrath and Moran isn't a bad thing.

So, back to the analogy ... are you suggesting that Wimbledon should still be in the PL .... or Forest? They all are once in a generation special teams.
